Design and Illustration

If you have creative talents, like to draw and want to explore careers that will help you use these skills, this course will give you the opportunity. You will learn about the many careers associated with design and illustration and get a chance to develop and improve your skills and portfolio.

Design and Illustration I

In this program you will encourage your creativity, develop a critical eye for design, build a visual art portfolio, study the work of successful design professionals, get experience using computers to design, learn how to use programs such as Adobe Photoshop, Macromedia Dreamweaver, Adobe Illustrator, Macromedia Flash, Adobe InDesign, Vector Works, QuarkXpress, learn how to organize complex jobs, build your visual vocabulary, learn how to work with clients, map out an individual course to help prepare you for your chosen career.

Prerequisite: Interview and Portfolio Presentation

Design and Illustration II

In the second year of this program, students continue working on their portfolios, gain more experience in solving design problems and prepare for work experience, as well as for post-secondary education.

Further Educational Opportunities

Students learn about a wide variety of further educational opportunities available to them in art and design. Many go on to attend top art progams and schools across the country.

Qualified students can earn up to fifteen credits toward an Associates or Bachelors Degree in Design & Graphic Communication, through an Articulation Agreement with Lyndon State College.

Credits: 3 per year (Fine Arts Credit - after two years)
Grade Level: 11, 12 (10 with Director's Permission)

Job Prospects

Artists and designers are among occupations that are experiencing one of the highest growth rates. Projections for Vermont as well as the nation show that publication of multi-media and highly visual materials is up. Artists and designers are needed to meet this demand for visually sophisticated products.
