Medical nad Sports Sciences Students from BTC with UVM Medical Students
Both first and second year students in the Medical and Sports Sciences program have had a very busy first quarter that has included many enriching and rewarding activities.
First year students spent two weeks learning about various medical careers by doing library research and software searches. The students also had the opportunity to meet and interview many different medical professionals who came in to visit the class. The fields that were represented by professionals were physical therapy, occupational therapy, speech and language pathology, nursing, massage therapy, veterinary medicine, emergency medicine, physician’s assistant, respiratory therapy and radiography. Students also participated in a field trip to the UVM athletic training room. Many of the professionals shared tools of the trade with the students that made the demonstrations very interactive. Student feedback was very positive about the visits and many stated that they found it helpful in narrowing the focus of their future career. Students have since moved onto learning anatomy and physiology and are currently in the process of getting certified in CPR and first aid.
Second year students have been spending time learning outside the classroom as well. They have learned to use the special collections and government document sections of the UVM Bailey Howe library. They had the opportunity to attend a campus tour of UVM and were able to participate in a discussion about the college application process. During their cardiovascular pathology and rehabilitation unit students visited the cardiac rehabilitation unit at Fletcher Allen Health Care. Currently the second year students are involved in providing community service activities alongside second year medical students at UVM. The relationship that has been developed with the medical students has been incredibly rewarding for these high school students and one that we plan to continue into the future.
