MEDICAL AND SPORTS SCIENCES RESPONDS TO STUDENT INTEREST IN NURSING

Irene Bonin, Nurse Educator, Helps Haly Pham Give Injection

Nationally and locally, the demand and salaries for nurses are increasing. In response, more and more students are becoming interested in pursuing a career in nursing. The Medical and Sports Sciences program provides all students interested in health care careers with an exceptional foundation of academic knowledge and hands-on skills. In response to student interest, we are enhancing our instruction of patient assessment and care to include more nursing skills. Some of these areas include: conducting and documenting a patient interview and physical examination (including vital signs), wound care and medication administration. Grant funding has allowed the purchasing of hospital-grade supplies and innovative training aids such as a life-sized patient manikin who simulates normal and abnormal breath sounds and heart/EKG rhythms.
