Medical & Sports Sciences Student Analyzes a Specimen
Students in the recently expanded Medical and Sports Sciences program began their medical lab science studies with a unit on phlebotomy (blood drawing) and urinalysis (the clinical study of urine). Students have the opportunity to further their study in phlebotomy by participating in a clinical work experience at Fletcher Allen Health Care, where they can practice drawing blood on actual patients while under the direct supervision of Fletcher Allen staff. This additional training will allow students to become credentialed in phlebotomy, a skill that is very useful in many of the medical professions. In addition to phlebotomy and urinalysis, students will learn how to perform common diagnostic tests in hematology (the study of blood) and microbiology (the study of bacteria and viruses including bioterrorism agents). The students will finish up the semester with an exciting unit on forensic science in which they will explore DNA analysis and the analysis of fingerprint and trace evidence.
