Aviation Students Visit Pratt & Whitney
On Wednesday, November 6, 2002 the BTC and post-secondary Aviation Technology students went to Pratt and Whitney U.S.A. at the Plattsburgh Air Force Base in Plattsburgh, New York. The students were given a tour of the facilities and the aircraft. During the tour students were given the chance to go inside the 747 SP (special performance), a test platform for the engines that Pratt and Whitney builds. They attach the test engine to the number two pylon, a specially built pylon to handle the tremendous weight of the engines being tested. They also have fitted the aircraft with separate systems for the test engine, including hydraulic systems, electronic systems, and fuel systems.
A high point of the visit was entering the aircraft itself and exploring the cockpit and seating sections. The seats were removed to allow for all the computers that help filter, record and explain the performance of the test engine.
